Cincinnati and New York met twice during the 2018 regular season with FCC coming out on top both times by identical 2-1 score lines. On June 2 - the start of the team's record 23-game regular-season undefeated streak - FC Cincinnati came back after going down 1-0 to score twice and take the 2-1 win on the road at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. Later on July 21, Forrest Lasso and Paddy Barrett's headed goals in the first half lifted FCC over the Red Bulls and onward to the 2-1 win at Nippert Stadium.
FCC advanced to Saturday's semifinal round after a thrilling game on Saturday night. After a scoreless game through 90 minutes, Cincinnati and Nashville SC played a 30-minute extra-time session.
Corben Bone staked the Orange and Blue to a 1-0 lead in the 95th minute, and FCC seemingly had the game in hand until Nashville defender Bradley Bourgeois saw his shot in a scramble deflected up and over an outstretched Spencer Richey to level the score at 1-1 in the 115th minute.
Still tied at 1-1 after extra time, the teams advanced to penalty kicks. Both teams made their first five attempts and they moved to sudden-death rounds. Nashville, shooting first, saw their sixth shooter - defender Justin Davis - sky his attempt over Richey's crossbar. Kenney Walker then stepped up and converted his attempt, going opposite of Nashville goalkeeper Matt Pickens, to send FC Cincinnati through to the semifinal round.
This marks the first time FC Cincinnati has advanced to the second round of the USL Cup Playoffs, having suffered first-round losses in each of its first two seasons.
The top overall seed in the 2018 USL Cup Playoffs, FC Cincinnati has earned the right to host every round it plays at home at Nippert Stadium, up to and including the USL Cup Championship. Should FCC continue to advance, all games will be played at Nippert Stadium:
Eastern Conference Semifinal: Saturday, Oct. 27 | 4 p.m.
Eastern Conference Championship: Friday, Nov. 2 | 7:30 p.m.
USL Cup: Thursday, Nov. 8 | 8 p.m. | ESPN2
