Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

WILMINGTON, N.C. - In game one, Daniel Aldrich hit a solo homerun for Wilmington, but the SwampDogs were able to overcome that in extra innings. In game two, Aldrich made sure the SwampDogs were far out of reach long before extra innings were needed.

Aldrich hit a grand slam homerun in the third inning and followed that with a three-run homer in the sixth in support of start Chris Mazza's seven inning, nine strikeout performance as the Wilmington Sharks beat the Fayetteville SwampDogs, 13-3, on Friday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium. The first round series is now tied at 1, with the deciding game three to be played in Fayetteville at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Fayetteville gave up two runs in the first, as Wilmington's Jake Mayers hit a two-run homer off Dom Macaluso (0-1). But the SwampDogs rallied with an RBI single from John Hogan in the first and RBI singles from Dylan Brown and Cody Hudson in the second to take a 3-2 lead.

That set the stage for Aldrich, who stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and no one out in the third. Aldrich smacked a 2-1 pitch into the night in right field, the same type of towering homeruns he hit in the same stadium to win the 2011 CPL Home Run Derby back on July 17.

The SwampDogs had no answer for Aldrich, thanks in large part to Chris Mazza, who settled down after the first two innings to hold the ‘Dogs lineup scoreless. He finished having allowed just five hits through his seven innings, and did not allow a runner to reach third after the second inning.

Lefthander Alex Belew will get the ball tomorrow night for the SwampDogs, while Mayers will get the call for Wilmington. Gates will open at 6 p.m., with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
