Forest City Owls News Release

FOREST CITY, N.C. - The Forest City Owls took advantage of four Asheboro errors and rode another strong start by Seth Cutler-Voltz to defeat the Copperheads, 9-3, on Friday night at McNair Field. The Owls sweep the Copperheads and advance to the CPL Semifinals.

Cutler-Voltz threw seven strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out five batters and walking two. Asheboro starter Stephen Rivera was somewhat victimized by his defense, allowing four unearned runs in three innings of action. Cutler-Voltz earned the victory while Rivera was hit with the loss.

The Owls were relentless offensively, scoring at least one run in five consecutive innings between the second and sixth frames. Forest City scored its first two runs in the bottom of the second inning, when a throwing error by Asheboro 1B Mike McCarthy allowed Michael Basil and Justin Britt to score. Forest City notched another pair in the following inning on Dusty Quattlebaum's RBI single to center field. Britt scored on an error by Copperheads 3B Noah Holmes on that play, while Danny Canela was also able to cross the plate. Forest City owned a 4-0 lead after three frames and knocked García out of the contest.

The Owls struck again in the bottom of the fourth when Reed Harper knocked a double into the right center gap, bringing Basil home. Canela kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the fifth when he raced home on a wild pitch. Quattlebaum singled Britt home on the following at bat and boosted the Forest City lead to 7-0. Harper scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth to make it an 8-0 Owls lead.

The Copperheads finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning, putting up a couple of runs on an RBI single by Tanner Merritt and an error by Michael Basil that allowed a run to score. The Owls and Copperheads scored a run apiece in the next two innings, bringing the final score to 9-3 in favor of Forest City.

The Owls will begin the semifinal round on Monday night. Forest City's opponent and the venue for Game 1 of the second round have not yet been determined. Be sure to check forestcitybaseball.com and coastalplain.com for postseason updates.
