Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - For the first time all season, the Fayetteville SwampDogs are not in first place in the CPL South.

The Florence RedWolves (10-8) used 11 hits and two SwampDogs errors to beat Fayetteville, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at J.P. Riddle Stadium. The RedWolves have now won all four meetings this season between the two teams, and own a half game lead over Fayetteville (9-8).

Just as they did Friday night, the SwampDogs managed to get the tying run to third base in the bottom of the ninth inning. But with runners at first and third and two outs, Cody Davis grounded into a force play that ended the ballgame and dropped Fayetteville to second place.

Dom Macaluso (1-2) suffered the loss, despite only allowing one earned run in five innings. He did not walk a batter - the first SwampDogs starter to throw at least five innings and not allow a free pass - and struck out three while allowing eight hits. The RedWolves scored two unearned runs off Macaluso after two errors by shortstop Matt Orloff.

The SwampDogs had their own assistance from the Florence defense, as two errors on the same play by RedWolves starter Michael Guinane led to the first Fayetteville run. But Guinane (2-0) left with a lead after six innings having allowed just two runs on six hits, and earned his second win of the season against the SwampDogs.

The SwampDogs will now host Columbia in a doubleheader on Monday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium. The two teams will resume the suspended game from Saturday night, with Columbia batting as the home team in the bottom of the fourth inning. That game will be played to its full, 9-inning conclusion. Fayetteville and Columbia will then play their regularly scheduled game beginning one half hour after the completion of the first game, and lasting just seven innings. Gates open at 5 p.m., with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m.
