Fayetteville Acquires Rickert

GREENVILLE, S.C., January 31 - The Fayetteville Patriots have acquired forward Rick Rickert from the NBA Development League available player pool. Rickert fills the roster spot vacated when Mateen Cleaves signed with the Seattle Sonics earlier this week. The Patriots also waived guard Mike King.

Rickert, 6-11, 215, was a second-round selection (55th overall) by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2003 NBA Draft after declaring as an early entry from the University of Minnesota. He played in four preseason games for the Timberwolves in 2004-05 before being waived. This is his second stint in the D-League, having played 12 games for Asheville (now Tulsa) in 2004-05 and averaging 18.1 minutes, 6.7 points and 3.2 rebounds.

In two seasons as Minnesota he played in 63 games (62 starts), averaging 14.9 points and 5.7 rebounds. He was a two-time All-Big 10 selection and the conference Freshman of the Year in 2002. As a prep player at Duluth East High School he was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Minnesota and played in the 2001 McDonald's High School All-America Game.

Cleaves played in two games for the Patriots before earning his GATORADE Call-Up, averaging 18.5 minutes, 7.0 points, 4.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds. King played in 21 games (17 starts) for Fayetteville, averaging 28.9 minutes, 14.4 points and 4.0 rebounds.
