Fatawu Safiu Named to USL Team of the Week After a Triumphant Return to Portland

VANCOUVER, BC - Striker Fatawu Safiu was named to the USL Team of the Week after his spectacular performance on Friday, leading Whitecaps FC 2 to a 3-1 win over Timbers 2 in his first return to Portland, the league announced on Tuesday.

Safiu gave the 'Caps an early two-goal advantage on 19 minutes when he teed off on a spectacular direct free kick, curling one in for his second goal of the season. The Ghana native was making his first start for WFC2, and his first appearance back in Portland, where he began his USL career with Timbers 2 in 2015.

This is the second time Safiu has received the weekly league honour this season, previously getting the nod in Week 5 after recording a goal and an assist in a comeback draw versus LA Galaxy II.

Captain Kyle Greig was also on the recognized with a bench selection this week after he added to his goal tally with the opening score on Friday's win. The striker, now second-best in the league with eight goals in the year, put the 'Caps ahead 55 seconds into the match, scoring the fastest goal in the two-year history of Whitecaps FC 2.

USL Team of the Week

GK - Cody Laurendi, OKC Energy FC: Laurendi put in a standout performance on the road as his six-save shutout led Energy FC to a 1-0 win against San Antonio FC.

D - Konrad Plewa, New York Red Bulls II: Plewa was strong defensively, and provided the assist on Junior Flemmings' late winner in NYRBII's 1-0 win at Montreal.

D - Shawn Ferguson, Charleston Battery: Ferguson scored with a nifty finish and then helped the Battery defense shut down Wilmington's attack in a 1-0 win on the road.

D - Dave Romney, LA Galaxy II: Romney scored a late equalizer as Los Dos earned a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Sunday.

D - Josh Suggs, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC: Suggs scored a brilliant Olimpico for the opening goal of the game, and was solid defensively in a 3-1 win against Arizona.

M - Lebo Moloto, Pittsburgh Riverhounds: Moloto's outstanding opening goal paved the way for the Riverhounds to claim their first win of the season on Saturday night.

M - Ricardo Velazco, Real Monarchs SLC: Velazco had two goals and one assist to lead the Monarchs back from a halftime deficit in their 3-1 win against Orange County.

M - Fatawu Safiu, Whitecaps FC 2: Safiu scored a spectacular free kick, and was a consistent threat in attack against his former club in WFC2's 3-1 win in Portland.

F - Hadji Barry, Orlando City B: The Rochester native scored both goals as OCB took a 2-1 victory against the Rhinos on Sunday evening.

F - Aaron Wheeler, Harrisburg City Islanders: Wheeler notched a pair of goals and one assist on Sunday evening as the City Islanders defeated Bethlehem 3-1.

F - Irvin Herrera, Saint Louis FC: Herrera struck four times as his movement off the ball caused havoc for Tulsa's defense in a 5-2 win for STLFC at ONEOK Field.
