Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks led from the beginning and dodged a Cedar Rapids RoughRiders second period rally Saturday, pulling away to a 7-3 road victory at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.
The Black Hawks didn't waste any time speeding to a 2-0 lead. At 3:18, Zach Stepan had a RoughRider in front of him in the slot. Bouncing the puck off the defenseman and using the man as a screen, Stepan sent a low shot past the stick side of goalie Chris Birdsall. Liam Pecararo struck next at 4:39, receiving a cross-crease pass from Vince Hinostroza and beating Birdsall moving right-to-left. A half dozen Hawks had great chances to build the lead further in the first, but it didn't happen until 27.8 seconds remained. The rebound of Ryan Papa's shot sprang to Kyle Schmidt, who fired the puck under the crossbar, setting the intermission tally at 3-0.
Waterloo tacked on three more in the second, but only after the RoughRiders scored twice. Just after a power play ended at 1:48, Gerald Mayhew lifted a shot to the net from the left wing circle. At 4:09, the home team drew to within a goal when Phil Marinaccio came off the left wing boards through traffic and was able to dribble a shot over the goal line.
The game was played with the teams separated by just one goal for most of the next ten minutes, until the Hawks broke back in front, beginning with a two-on-one rush capped by a Hinostroza score at 13:02. Justin Kloos and Taylor Cammarata capitalized on a two-on-none breakaway at 14:48, with Kloos getting the last touch. Then Hinostroza scored again when a loose puck found him with time to pick his spot from the slot at 18:35.
Cedar Rapids and Waterloo exchanged goals in the third. Judd Peterson scored first from the top of the crease at 11:33. Off the opening faceoff on a power play just over a minute later, Cammarata got the puck and slid it over the goal line as the net was being knocked out of position, recording the 100th point of his USHL career in the process.
A stretch of three consecutive Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup games continues at Young Arena on Friday when the Dubuque Fighting Saints meet the Black Hawks for the first time this season. The 7:05 game will feature Warner Bros. star Bugs Bunny, presented by U.S. Bank. For tickets, contact the Black Hawks box office at (319) 291-7680 or visit waterlooblackhawks.com.
