Danbury Trashers News Release
DANBURY, CT-A crowd of approximately 1,000 fans took part in a preseason scrimmage at the Danbury Ice Arena on Thursday night as A.J. Galante's Blue squad picked up a 9-8 win over Candace Galante's White squad in the first annual Trashers Blue & White Scrimmage.
In a game that featured two 20-minute periods and a shootout featuring all 14 skaters from each side, the Blue team's 6-4 edge in the extra session proved to be the difference in the contest.
The White squad quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 44 seconds into the first period as David Hymovitz netted an unassisted goal after stealing the puck in the Blue team's end. Another goal was added several minutes later on a Matt Blabac tally at the 8:02 mark of the period.
Blue finally scored at the 11:13 mark of the first period as Ryan Jorde ripped a shot past White netminder Frank Novello following an excellent pass from Francis Belanger, who assisted on all three Blue goals.
Alex Goupil opened the scoring for the White squad in the second period as he beat Dustin Traylen following a face-off deep in the Blue zone. Jeff Daw assisted on the goal at the 5:06 mark to give White a 3-1 lead. The White team scored again as Drew Omicioli took a pass from older brother Mike Omicioli at the 12:01 of the second period. Carlyle Lewis also earned an assist to help White to a 4-1 advantage.
However, the Blue squad jumped back into the contest as they scored a pair of goals just 18 seconds apart by Andrew McKay and Fred Belanger, both assisted by Francis Belanger at the 17:19 and 17:37 marks of the second period.
While the White team won the regulation part of the scrimmage, the Blue team was superior in the shootout. Unlike a typical shootout, all 14 skaters participated for each side and each shootout goal was counted on the scoreboard. When all was said and done, the shootout provided the Blue team with a 9-8 win which gave A.J. Galante an opportunity to direct the losing White squad in a series of on-ice drills.
The scrimmage atmosphere also featured a different twist, as penalties were resolved with a penalty shot rather than a power play. However, only three penalties were called in the contest with no goals scored on any of the penalty shots.
