Pensacola Pelicans News Release
A steady player and fan favorite will once again be in Pelicans pin stripes for the 2007 season. The Pelicans acquired first-baseman and designated hitter (DH) Larry Bethea in a trade from the Nashua Pride of the Can-Am League in exchange for a 2007 first round draft pick.
Prior to being traded to Nashua in August of last season, Bethea was hitting .298 with 10 doubles, 7 homeruns, 36 RBI and 9 stolen bases in 63 games with the Pelicans. The big right-hander continued his success with the Pride as he hit .308 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 8 homeruns, and 26 RBI in only 31 games.
Bethea has solidified his name in Pensacola's record books even before beginning his fourth season with the Pelicans in 2007. He currently holds the single season record for most homeruns (21), RBI (76), and doubles (22) and most career homeruns (43). Bethea also hold the second all-time position in games played (232), at-bats (859), hits (248), and runs (135) all behind Carlos Mendoza.
"There is no question, Bethea has proven himself at this level and will bring that "big bat" to our line-up," said Pelicans manager Mac Seibert.
In his career, Bethea has 84 long-balls, 100 doubles, 350 RBI and has scored 282 runs since his first professional season in 1995.
"I look forward to playing back in Pensacola under the new manager, this is my home," said Bethea. "I love the team, city, and fans. I want to finish my career in Pensacola, whenever that might be."
The Pensacola resident began his career in 1995 when he was drafted and signed in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Pels Notes: *The Pelicans will be participating in the Michles and Booth P.A. Christmas Caroling Caravan on Thursday, Dec. 21 to raise money for the FavorHouse of NWFL and the service men and women deployed in Iraq. They will be singing to downtown businesses from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
