Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Fighting Falcons, proud members of the North American Hockey League, will take the first step toward building their roster for next season as they host their first tryout camp of the summer this weekend at Mount Clemens Ice Arena.
The camp begins Friday afternoon with check-in at 2:30 p.m., and scrimmage games from 3:30 to 7:45 p.m. The camp continues Saturday with games from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., and a second session from 4 p.m. to 7:15. The camp concludes Sunday with the final two games taking place at 9 and 10:45 a.m. Admission is free for fans throughout the weekend.
The Pre-Draft Camp will allow over 80 players to showcase their skills for Fighting Falcons coaches and scouts. Players will be divided into four teams that will play four games each throughout the weekend. With the 2013 NAHL Draft scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, the three-day camp is a great opportunity for the Fighting Falcons to finish their scouting and preparations for the draft.
Players attending the camp hope to earn an invitation to Port Huron's Main Camp, which will take place in late June.
Players will travel from 15 different states to attend this weekend's camp, as well as from Canada, Austria, and South Korea. For many, it is their first opportunity to play in front of NAHL scouts. For others, the camp is a chance to stay on the Fighting Falcons' radar.
"We're really looking forward to taking the next step towards the 2013-14 season with the Pre-Draft Camp," said Fighting Falcons Head Coach and General Manager Michael Gershon. "There are a lot of great players we've been following that have signed up, and many more that we haven't seen yet but come highly recommended from other coaches and scouts.
"Every player at this camp will get four chances to showcase their skills, and we will have plenty of eyes on each one of them," Gershon added. "The NAHL is full of success stories that began at Pre-Draft Camps around the league, and we hope to have a few of those success stories begin this weekend."
Mark Evan Auk is the prime example of a Pre-Draft Camp success story. The defenseman began his 2012-13 season at the Fighting Falcons' 2012 Pre-Draft Camp. Auk later earned a spot on the Fighting Falcons' roster, and after just 20 games in Port Huron the Grosse Pointe Park, MI native signed a commitment to play college hockey at Michigan Tech University. By early December, Auk was called up to the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the Tier 1 United States Hockey League, where he finished his 2012-13 season.
With the help of new Director of Player Personnel Nick Shackford, the Fighting Falcons hope to discover more players with Auk's potential.
Another Open Tryout Camp will take place in Mount Clemens June 21-23. Players interested in competing for a spot at Main Camp can find all registration forms on the Fighting Falcons' website.
The Fighting Falcons return to McMorran Arena for their fourth NAHL season this fall. Season ticket packages start at just $175, and the first 25 fans to purchase two or more full season ticket packages will receive a free game-worn Fighting Falcons jersey.
