September 16, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA - The ownership group of the Springfield Falcons Hockey Team today announced that long-standing President and General Manager, Bruce Landon, has been offered and has agreed to extend his employment agreement with the organization for an additional three years.
Landon is entering his 31st season in hockey management, 15th season as President of the Falcons and 25th campaign as General Manager in Springfield. Landon is also only one of two individuals in the history of the American Hockey League to have won all three major league awards given to front office personnel. Landon won the Ken McKenzie Award (Outstanding Executive - PR & Marketing) in 1980, he won the James C. Hendy Memorial Award (Outstanding Executive) in 1989 and also was awarded the Thomas Ebright Award (Outstanding Contributions to the AHL) in 2008.
It was in 1994, that Landon decided to dedicate his life to keeping professional hockey in Springfield, the city that embraced him for so many years as a professional hockey player. After Springfield briefly lost its professional hockey team, Landon, along with long-time friend and former teammate Wayne LaChance, spearheaded an investment group called Pro Friends, Inc. This group would be formed and subsequently awarded an AHL expansion franchise in May of 1994. Since day one of the Falcons, Landon has been the club's President and General Manager. Prior to the 2002-03 season, Landon helped assemble a new ownership group entitled Springfield Pro Hockey, LLC which purchased the Falcons from Pro Friends, Inc.
Over the past several months, the organization, led by Landon, has gained significant, positive momentum in its efforts to sell more season tickets with the goal of re-establishing its strong franchise presence in the Springfield region.
"The extension of Mr. Landon's contract is another positive step for this franchise and the greater Springfield community," said ownership group member Joe Cambi. "At the same time, the commitment of our ownership group to extend Mr. Landon's contract for three years also represents our acknowledgment that much work still needs to be done in the process of stabilizing our region's only professional sports franchise. Generating the necessary revenues from season ticket sales and advertising sponsorships will keep us at levels consistent with other upper echelon and successful AHL teams."
The entire Falcons organization including the players, the Falcons' NHL affiliate Edmonton Oilers, the AHL Board of Governors, headquartered here in Springfield, and the great number of loyal hockey fans, are hopeful that the community will continue to work with Landon and his talented and committed staff to continue the legacy of "black and blue" Springfield style hockey since 1936.
