ECHL ECHL

Falcons, Condors, Thunder Seeking Game 6 Win

April 21, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

PRINCETON, N.J. - Fresno will try to keep its Kelly Cup Playoff hopes alive and force Game 7 with a win against Utah on Monday while Bakersfield and Stockton will both be looking to do the same in their games on Tuesday.

Sixth-seed Utah beat third-seed Fresno 1-0 in overtime on Saturday to take a 3-2 series lead. The Grizzlies are 2-0 at Fresno in the postseason with a 6-1 win on Apr. 13 and a 4-3 win in triple overtime on Apr. 14. The game on Apr. 14 was the sixth-longest game in the 20-year history of the ECHL at 106:23. Game 7, if necessary, would be Wednesday at Fresno.

Seventh-seed Bakersfield came from behind for a 5-4 win at home on Saturday to force Tuesday's game at second-seed Victoria while the eighth-seed Thunder won 6-3 on Sunday to set up Tuesday's game at Las Vegas which is the top seed in the National Conference. If the Condors force Game 7 it would be Wednesday at Victoria while the Thunder would play Game 7 at Las Vegas on Wednesday.

In the history of the ECHL there have been three teams who have come back to win a series after trailing 3-1. The three teams are Dayton in the North Division Finals in 2007, Mississippi in the Kelly Cup Finals in 1999 and Las Vegas in the Division Semifinals in 2006.

Mississippi won Game 5 (2-0 at home) before winning Game 6 (7-3 at Richmond) to force Game 7 which Mississippi won 4-3 in double overtime at home. Las Vegas won Game 5 (5-2 at Idaho) before winning Game 6 (6-0 at home) to force Game 7 which Las Vegas won 6-2 at home. The Wranglers won their first-ever postseason series when they became only the second team in league history to come back after trailing 3-1 in a series. Las Vegas outscored Idaho 17-4 in the final three games to advance to the division finals where the Wranglers lost in six games to eventual champion Alaska.

Dayton won Game 5 (6-2 at Cincinnati) before winning Game 6 (3-0 at home) to force Game 7 which they won 5-3. The Bombers beat Florida in seven games in the American Conference Finals before losing in five games to Idaho in the Kelly Cup Finals.

In the history of the ECHL there have been 12 series that have gone to Game 7. The home team has won nine of the 12 games (75 percent) but, the visitor was the winner in the last Game 7 as Dayton beat Florida 4-3 in overtime to advance to the Kelly Cup Finals a year ago. Trenton won on the road at Alaska in the conference finals en route to the Kelly Cup championship in 2005 and the Carolina Thunderbirds won Game 7 at Johnstown to capture the first ECHL championship in 1989.

There have been six Game 7s in the last two years, including a record four in 2006, after only having six Game 7s in the previous 17 years. The 2006 Kelly Cup Playoffs were the first time that more than one Game 7 had been played in a single postseason.

Dayton in 2007 became the first team in ECHL history to win two Game 7s in a single postseason, beating Cincinnati at home in the North Division Finals and Florida on the road in the American Conference Finals. The Bombers became only the third team to overcome a 3-1 deficit to win a playoff series when they beat Cincinnati.

Bakersfield in 2006 was the first team to play two Game 7s in a single postseason, beating Long Beach in the division semifinals before losing in the division finals to Fresno. The Falcons then became the second team to play two Game 7s when they lost in double overtime in the conference finals on the road to eventual champion Alaska.
