Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons, proud members of the American Hockey League, announced today that radio play-by-play broadcaster John Michael has accepted a position with the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters as their director of broadcasting. Michael served as Springfield's radio play-by-play broadcaster for the previous two seasons.
"We are extremely proud of John and this is a great opportunity for him to go and advance his career," said Falcons president and general manager Bruce Landon. "The Falcons completely supported and encouraged John to pursue this opportunity in a bigger market with a team that is owned by an NBA franchise because this move can create other opportunities for John as a broadcaster. John has a chance to not only broadcast radio games with Lake Erie, but also gain some valuable experience broadcasting television games as well. This move also puts him a short drive from his hometown of Pittsburgh. John did a first-class job while with the Falcons and we wish him nothing but the best for both himself and his wife Julie."
Michael started with the Falcons at the start of the 2005-06 campaign after spending two seasons as "The Voice" of the ECHL's Johnstown Chiefs. Michael was the 2004-05 ECHL "Broadcaster of the Year," a season in which he also broadcasted the 2005 ECHL All-Star Game for NHL Radio.
"Words can't express the gratitude and respect I have for Bruce Landon," said Michael. "From the day I set foot in Springfield, he supported my efforts and gave me a great opportunity to succeed in this great city. Bruce is the overwhelming reason that hockey is alive in Springfield, and I feel truly privileged to have worked not only for the one of the best guys in hockey, but one of the best individuals that I have ever met."
Michael was also very active is the Springfield community. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Broadcasting at Springfield College during the 2006-07 campaign. In addition, Michael helped lead a "Kids Must Set Their Goals" program in local elementary and middle schools in which he mentored and presented broadcasting clinics during the school year.
"I'd also be remiss if I didn't thank the fans of Springfield," said Michael. "It is their kind words and encouragement over these two years that made my time in Springfield memorable and allowed me to greatly enjoy my work here."
