Faison shines as BayBears take first alone

July 15, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release

Mobile, Ala. – Monday night's game between the top two teams in the Western Division of the Southern League lived up to its billing. The Mobile BayBears and Huntsville Stars each enetered the game with identical 11-9 records. Both starting pitchers were members of this season's All-Star game and both threw gems. However, it was Vince Faison who stole the show for the BayBears.

With his team trailing the Stars 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Faison, who entered the game in the seventh as part of a double-switch, came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Faison ended the game with a two-run ground rule double to left-center field. Chris Rojas (4-6) earned the win as he threw a scoreless ninth.

The BayBears loaded the bases with a lead off, pinch-hit walk to Bobby Scales, a single by Humberto Quintero, followed by a walk to J.J. Furminiak.

Faison's hit took BayBears starter Cory Stewart off the hook. Stewart gave up the Stars lone run in the top of the seventh inning on a throwing error. Brandon Gemoll hit a one-hopper back to the mound Stewart over-threw Danny Bravo at first base, allowing Gemoll to go all the way to third. Kade Johnson drove in Gemoll with a sacrifice fly to give the Stars the lead.

That was Stewart's only mistake of the night, however. The left-hander threw six and one-thirds innings giving up only three hits while striking out nine batters. Huntsville's starter, Luis Martinez, threw a gem of his own. Martinez worked seven shutout innings giving up just two hits while striking out seven.

The BayBears are now alone in first place with a 12-9 record. RHP Duncan McAdoo (3-5; 4.39) will get the start for the BayBears on the mound Tuesday night. First pitch at Hank Aaron Stadium is set for 7:05.
