Bloomington Extreme News Release
Bloomington Extreme indoor football coach Kenton Carr announced the signing of three players Wednesday, including former University of Illinois and Normal Community High School place-kicker Doug Higgins.
Higgins, a resident of Lexington who works in the banking business in Bloomington, has been on the Extreme roster at various times during the team's first two years. Carr said Higgins was signed as "an insurance policy" for regular kicker Peter Christofilakos.
Christofilakos has been battling a groin injury all season and was forced to sit out last week's game at Billings at the last minute when he aggravated the injury during warm-ups. That left the kicking duties to linebacker Blue Aldridge.
"We don't want to get caught in the same situation again this week," said Carr, whose team faces Sioux City in a 7:05 p.m. United Indoor Football game Saturday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.
"Pete has been dealing with his injury all season and at certain times it flares up to the point where he can't kick," added Carr. "He says he's ready to go this week, but it's really a day-to-day thing. We expect him to kick this week, but it will be a game-time decision.
"That's why it's great to have Doug in town. We can call on him at any time and he's ready to go. He has proven in the past what an outstanding kicker he is. He bailed us out in a couple of games last season."
Higgins, who holds a number of kicking records at Illinois and in the Big Ten, saw action in two games last season. He was successful on 5 of 8 field goal attempts with his longest coming from 32 yards. He also averaged 41.7 yards on kickoffs. His jersey number will be 89.
Carr also announced the signings of defensive back B.J. Brown and offensive linemen Anthony Rubican. Both played at Eastern Illinois University in college.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Brown played for the Sioux City Bandits last season and will wear No. 15. The 6-6, 310-pound Rubican is a rookie and will wear No. 72.
