Bloomington Extreme News Release
The Bloomington Extreme knocked off Eastern Conference leader RiverCity, 41-38, at Family Arena in St. Louis (Mo.) in United Indoor Football action Saturday.
The victory moves the Extreme's record to 3-3 and brings them within a half game of first place in the Eastern Conference.
The Extreme stormed out of the gate early, scoring touchdowns on five of its first six possessions. Quarterback Dusty Burk torched RiverCity's top ranked defense by connecting on 10 of 12 passes for 121 yards and four touchdowns before injuring his throwing hand in the second quarter.
Freddie Ray, the Extreme's back-up signal-caller, did a solid job managing the game upon Burk's departure and led his team into the locker room with a 34-20 lead.
The Rage (3-2) defense returned to form in the third quarter and halted the Extreme's offensive attack completely. Garrett Morgan cut into the lead with a 20-yard field goal, succeeded by a safety and an 8-yard touchdown run by running back Tim Blackwell.
Leading 34-32 in the fourth quarter, Ray countered Blackwell's efforts with an 8-yard touchdown scramble of his own to lift the Extreme to a 41-32 advantage.
As the clock continued to wind down, the Extreme defense held its ground. The Rage threatened to slice into the Extreme lead with a 39-yard field goal, but defensive back Carlos Lattimore blocked the attempt to end the threat.
Despite Bloomington starting at the RiverCity's 18-yard line after the blocked kick, the Rage continued to battle. Ray fired the ball into the end zone on the ensuing play, but was intercepted by defensive back Milton Proctor.
The turnover resulted in an 8-play, 45-yard drive which culminated in a 9-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Anthony Fisher to Blackwell.
Following the touchdown strike, the Extreme had 4:16 to hold on to a 41-38 lead. Led by Ray and running back Keith Brooks, the Extreme systematically chopped down the Rage defense as the clock expired.
Ray finished the game with 48 passing yards, 41 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Extreme will look to win its third game in a row when it returns home to square off against the Omaha Beef Saturday at 7:05 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
