Bloomington Extreme News Release

COLLEGE PARK, (Md.)-The scene was joyous Saturday night as excited Extreme fans filled Hooter's in Bloomington to watch the Bloomington Extreme (8-5) go on the road to face the Maryland Maniacs (0-13). The aroma of freshly cooked wings filled the air while fans cheered the Extreme to victory, 51-7.

The first score of the game came from Rocky Hinds as he tossed the ball to Johnny Gray in the end zone. A pass interference call had put the Extreme on the Maryland 10-yard line to set up them up for the score, 7-0.

Maryland attempted some deep strikes on their next series, and one of them connected when Cameron Dantley made a nice pass to McCarter Raymond to put them in Bloomington territory. Maryland got within 10 yards of scoring, before penalties pushed them back to the Bloomington 20-yard line. Maryland got close to putting points on the board with a field goal attempt, but hooked the kick, missing the attempt.

Regaining possession, Bloomington airs it out to Harry Lewis on first down, who then streaked down the wall to the one-yard line. Three downs later, Bernard Payton takes it into the end zone for the second score of the game, 14-0.

Reminiscent of previous match-ups, the Bloomington defense was playing with a fire lit underneath them. The combination of defensive linemen Quince Holman, Jeff Sobol, and Larry Luster ravaged the Maryland backfield. With the offense going nowhere, Maryland attempted a field goal, but it is blocked and recovered in the end zone by Luster for Bloomington's third score of the game, 21-0

Miscues litter the Maniac's game, as a high snap popped over Dantley's head and is recovered by the Bloomington defense. Frustration built and flags flew when Maryland participated in some physical activities after the whistle, near the goal line. This opened the door for Luke Drone to sneak the ball across the goal line for another Bloomington score, 28-0.

A flicker of hope gleamed for the Maniacs on the ensuing kickoff, as Roderick Bryant ran the ball past Bloomington defenders. However, to keep with the trend of Maryland football, he tripped and fell at the Bloomington 15-yard line. With hope fading as fast as time in the first half is running out, Maryland pulled off their first score of the game when Dantley found Deyon Williams in the front of the end zone, 28-7.

As Bloomington is ready to receive the ball, Maryland pulled a trick out of their bag with an unexpected onside kick, which they quickly recovered. With minutes remaining in the half, Maryland bombs the ball deep with the hope of cutting their deficit to only two possessions. Maryland's efforts lead them to the 10-yard- line before the ball is fumbled and Bloomington recovered. Pete Christofilakos attempts another field goal, but missed and possession goes back to Maryland for the final seconds of the half. Sobol earned his only sack of the game by sacking Dantley to seal the half.

Maryland opened the second half with the ball, but a bad throw by back-up quarterback Dwayne Smith led to a James Temple interception, and he nearly took the ball to the house, but was tackled on the two-yard line. Payton finishes the job, trudging into the end zone for the score, 35-7.

A combination of penalties and great Bloomington defense keeps Maryland from moving past their 10-yard line. Bloomington's defense puts two more points on the board as a swarm of defensive linemen engulf Smith in the end zone to earn a safety, 37-7.

With Bloomington on the offensive once again, Drone ran into the end zone for a 17-yard score, adding to the punishment, 44-7.

The Bloomington defense kept up its stellar play when Joe Beavis intercepted a pass from Smith, and took the ball 24-yards for the final score of the game, 51-7

With defeat looming ahead of the Maniacs, they still tried to put forth some sort of effort, but Calvin Jones had none of it, totaling four sacks for the game, three of which came right after one another. Missing another field goal, Maryland turned the ball over and the Extreme ran out the remaining clock.

Next Saturday, the Extreme end the regular season in Wisconsin, looking for a sweep of division rivals, the La Crosse Spartans (3-10), as Bloomington prepares for the play-offs. La Crosse is coming off a recent victory over the Chicago Slaughter, and will be looking to steal the last game of the season from the Extreme.
