Chico Outlaws News Release

RENO, NV - The Chico Outlaws may have clinched the Golden Baseball League's first half title and a post-season berth, but it was the Reno Silver Sox who resembled last year's league champs in Tuesday's series opener at Peccole Park - Reno piled up 15 hits, including nine for extra bases, and beat Chico 11-4 in the first of four between the regional rivals.

Chico actually got on the board first with two gift runs in the 3rd inning - with one out, Reno starter Matt Parris hit Eric Pringle with a pitch, then issued back-to-back walks to Steve Boggs and David Pierson. Jason Van Meetren's ground ball back to the mound plated Pringle...with Boggs scoring when Silver Sox first baseman Ryan Brown muffed a two-out grounder off the bat of Daniel Nava. The Outlaws 2-0 lead was short-lived, though...in the bottom of the 3rd Reno roared back, as Joe Melton led off the inning with a double and came home on a Tyler Pearson wild pitch. Later in the inning Juan Senreiso singled and Jose Rodriguez walked, setting the stage for Brown, who bombed a 3-2 pitch over the center field wall...the three-run homer putting the Silver Sox on top 4-2.

Reno went to the long ball again in the 5th - with two out and Victor Hall at third, Rodriguez belted a homer to left, making the score 6-2...Brown followed with a base hit and came home when Kane Simmons slugged his league-leading ninth homer of the year over the center field wall, upping the Silver Sox advantage to 8-2. The Outlaws shaved a little off Reno's lead in the top of the 6th when, with Todd Gossage aboard, Jake Ferris launched a two-run bomb to center to make the score 8-4...but that would be as close as Chico would get. Reno plated three in the 7th off Outlaws reliever John Segovia on an RBI single by Rodriguez and a two-run double by Sam Walker to put the Silver Sox up 11-4...then Parris combined with Reno relievers Shawn Balteff and Josh Evans to retire the last nine Outlaws batters in a row to seal the series-opening victory.

Parris (4-5) went seven innings to pick up the victory...Pearson (3-3) allowed eight runs and nine hits in five innings and suffered the defeat. Chico had just three hits on the night, while Rodriguez (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Brown (3-for-5, 3 RBI, 3 runs scored) led the Reno attack. Tuesday's loss dropped the Outlaws to 24-13 on the season, with the Silver Sox improving to 18-18 on the year...the first time Reno had been at the .500 mark since the first week of the season. Game two of the series is set for Wednesday, with left-hander Derrick Loop (5-2) on the mound for Chico; Reno will counter with righty James Johnson (0-2) Game time is 7:00pm...hear all the action with "The Voice" of the Outlaws, Rory Miller, beginning at 6:35pm on the internet or on SportsFan 101.7 FM ESPN Radio.
