Express tryout successful

August 2, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Jersey Express News Release

Pleasantville, NJ. The ABA Newark Express held its 2nd Open Tryout in search of NJ's finest basketball players. Registration began at 9am sharp, but seemed like a lifetime for the 30 hopefuls that arrived early at the doors of the Pleasantville Recreation Center. As the process of registration began, the air filled with a sense of anxiety, nervousness and competitiveness as each participant waited their turn to showcase their talents and earn a spot on the 2005-2006 roster. As they waited in anticipation, facilitator Darryl Smith AKA "D-TRAIN" prepared the stage for the next five hours of gut checking intensity. D-TRAINED - Performance Enhancement Specialist was brought in by the Newark Express organization to warm up and condition the group, then put them through a series of skill specific drills before getting on the court. The group was separated into teams and was given the green light to let it all hang out.

After four fast paced, high flying, give it your all games, owners Marsha Blount and Jacqueline Halyard addressed the teams. Ms. Halyard expressed her vision for the team and what type of team the organization would put together. Ms. Blount, with concern in her voice, reiterated, "We do not have a team yet. You are all not tryout out for one or two positions that need to be filled, we are starting from scratch." She continued by saying, "I need those of you who are leaders to lead. I need those of you who can shoot the ball to shoot. Do not play outside of your game. We are building a TEAM. Go back to the fundamentals, show me that you can play TEAM BALL." Before long, the group was narrowed to 20, then shortly after that to 10. By the end of the day, the strongest, smarkets and the fittest remained standing.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
