Express open tryout was a sucess

September 19, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Jersey Express News Release

On September 10th, 2005 the Newark Express held its 3rd Open try-out in preparation for its Inaugural Season. Facilitators Darryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins, Daryl "D-TRAIN" Smith, and Ron Moore, took 26 young men through five hours of Training Camp style workouts.

The group was thoroughly warmed-up and pushed to their physical limits in the first three hours. Time passed quickly for those watching but seemed like an eternity for those participating. As one spectator quoted, "They're working them too hard. They won't have anything left in them to play". That as it may be, was intentional, as co-owners Marsha Blount and Jacqueline Halyard sat back patiently waiting for the cream to rise to the top.

The last two hours was comprised of the groups being split into teams and then it was Showtime. The groups were asked to execute a play designed by the facilitators, and then were evaluated on execution, comprehension, team play, and court awareness while showcasing their talent.

Twelve young men were asked to stay as the other young men were released. One final quarter was played. These twelve young men laid it on the line, and gave it their last all out effort for an opportunity to earn a spot on the Training Camp Roster.

Congratulations to all the young men that came out to the Try-outs. The Newark Express organization extends their best wishes in all future endeavors.

The following young men have earned a spot in Training Camp this October.

1. Rasheed Sparks - Newark, NJ

2. Bart Jordan - Newark, NJ

3. Ian Wilson - Piscataway, NJ

4. Reginald Taylor - Plainfield, NJ

6. Derrick Washington - Irvington, NJ
