Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Eau Claire, Wis. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Eau Claire Express Tuesday night by a score of 8-2 at Carson Park. Alexandria is now 1-7 in the first half of the 2014 season.
The Anchors were first to get on the board in the top of the first against Aron McRee. Craig Nenning got things started with a one-out base hit. Nenning stole second and went to third on a ground out by Kris Goodman. Aaron Gretz came up clutch with a double to bring home Nenning and put the Anchors ahead 1-0.
Eau Claire bounced back in the bottom of the inning. Alexandria starter Blake Bass gave up a leadoff double to Brady Burzynksi and he quickly scored when Mike Barajas singled him home to knot the game at one.
In the Express half of the third, Burzynski got things started again when he reached on an error by the shortstop, Nenning. Burzynski moved to second on a ground ball and a wild pitch got him to third. With two gone in the inning, Tyler Hermann hit an infield single to score a run and put the Express up 2-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, the game was put away as three Alexandria miscues led to four more runs extending the Express's lead to 6-1.
The Blue Anchors were able to get one back in the top of the sixth when Aaron Gretz singled with one out and came around to score on a two-out triple from Roman Collins to close the gap to 6-2.
Ryan Froom came in to pitch the sixth and after he recorded the first out, the next three batters reached to load the bases. A single from Tyler Jones scored Jaquish to make the score 7-2. With two gone in the inning, Froom delivered a wild pitch and it allowed Burzynski to score the final run and give the final score of 8-2.
Bass (0-2) pitched well enough to win but takes credit for the loss as he went 4.2 innings giving up six runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks with a season-high five strikeouts. Andrew Thome came in to finish the fifth and allowed just a base hit in 1/3 of an inning. Froom finished the game and settled down in his final two innings to finish his outing with three innings pitched and two runs allowed on three hits, a walk and two punch outs.
Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Aaron Gretz (DH) - Gretz has been swinging the bat great since joining the squad. He is hitting .600 through three games. On Tuesday, he was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
