Evansville BlueCats News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats (2-4) earned a big road win last Saturday night when they defeated the Ohio Valley Greyhounds 51-45 in Wheeling, West Virginia. Evansville led 31-19 at the half before piling up a huge 51-19 lead early in the 4th quarter. The BlueCats withstood an impressive come back try by the Greyhounds (1-5) sparked by two successful on-side kicks which the Greyhounds were eventually able to convert into two 4th quarter touchdowns. However, the BlueCats held them off with a defensive stand in the games final minute to earn the victory.
The BlueCats offense scored their highest point total so far this season with 51 points. Quarterback Haven Mosley had an outstanding night, completing 18 of his 25 pass attempts for 259 yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions. His completions were spread out to 5 different receivers and he connected with a different receiver on each of his touchdown passes. Mosley also rushed 4 times for 19 yards and another touchdown.
The receiving corps was led by a strong game from wide receiver Levron Williams who had his best game of the 2007 season with 7 receptions for 98 yards and touchdown. Odest Shannon had 4 receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown and Dale Jennings had 2 catches for 24 yards and a score. Richard Johnson caught 3 passes for 46 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown catch, the BlueCats longest pass play of the season.
Richard Johnson has now scored touchdowns in 4 different ways, becoming the first player in Evansville BlueCats history to pass for a touchdown, rush for a touchdown, return a kick for a touchdown, and make a touchdown reception in the same season. He accomplished this in only 6 games. He's made 2 touchdown passes, 2 rushing touchdowns, 2 kick return touchdowns, and one touchdown reception.
BlueCats running back Ray Kirkley had another strong game with 45 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns, giving him 8 on the season. Kirkley also caught 2 passes for 5 yards.
The defense had several strong performances led by AJ Bryant who recorded 7 solo tackles and broke up a pass. Linebackers John Winchester and Brian Houston each totaled 4.5 tackles. Deion Holts and LaDrelle Bryant each recorded a sack and defensive back Choo Choo Davis made 4.5 tackles, broke up 4 passes, and forced the decisive fumble in the final minute of the game to help seal the BlueCats victory.
BlueCats kicker Daniel Woods was solid in his debut, converting 6 of 7 on extra points and 1 of 4 on field goal attempts. No kicks were blocked.
The BlueCats offense scored on 8 of their first 9 possessions in the game. The only possession they didn't score came on a 9-play 43-yard drive on which the BlueCats fumbled the ball and lost possession on the 1-yard line. The BlueCats defense held Ohio Valley to only 2 of 11 on 3rd down conversions.
The BlueCats will enjoy a bye this week before returning to action on Sunday, May 13th when they travel to face the Omaha Beef.
The BlueCats will return home on Saturday, May 19th, when they host the Lexington Horsemen.
