ESPN the Magazine recognizes Captains Dog Day promotion

(Eastlake, OH)—For the second consecutive year, ESPN the Magazine has recognized the Lake County Captains with one of its annual "Veeckie" awards.

The awards, which exist in print only, are named after former Indians owner and baseball promotional legend Bill Veeck. The list is part of a yearly feature on the more unusual fan promotions in minor league baseball.

This season, the Captains' popular Dog Day of Summer promotion headed the list under the category "Best Way to Insult Your Skipper." When the Captains welcomed 670 dogs and their owners into the ballpark on August 9th, one of the between-innings contests was to find the dog that most resembled Captains manager Luis Rivera.

The magazine, on newsstands now, also mentioned promotions by three other SAL clubs, the Savannah Sand Gnats, Charleston RiverDogs and Greensboro Bats.

In 2003, the Captains also made the list after holding "Bill Veeck Night." The tribute to the award's namesake included flowers for the ladies and a re-enactment of Veeck's famous trick of sending midget Eddie Gaedel to the plate for an actual at-bat with the St. Louis Browns in 1951.
