Errors Prove Costly for Sharks

Gastonia, North Carolina-After a three-run top of the first, the Wilmington Sharks were kept off of home plate for the remainder of the game in a 5-3 loss to the Gastonia Grizzlies Friday night at Sims Legion Park. The loss was the third straight for the Sharks as they fell to 7-12 on the season.

The game began with Steven Curry and Jacob Plastiak recording back-to-back singles. With one out, Corey Everett singled home Curry to put the Sharks on the board. Chad Fairey drew a walk to load the bases. CJ Conrad followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Sharks up 2-0. Fairey then stole second, allowing Everett to score from third on the throwdown to make it 3-0.

The Grizzlies answered back in the bottom of the inning when Bill Hanna drew a lead off walk. He then stole second and advanced to third on a single by Jeff Cyr. An error by Fairey in right field allowed Hanna to score and advanced Cyr to second. With one out, Cyr stole third and scored on a throwing error by Aaron McKeithan cutting the lead to 3-2.

Hanna drew another lead off walk to begin the bottom of the third. Sharks pitcher Garrett McDaniels overthrew first in an attempted pick off allowing Hanna to go all the way to third. With one out, Nathan Chevalier scored him on an RBI groundout. Andrew Orzel then came up and hit a two-out double. Chase Achuff hit a two-run home run to put the Grizzlies on top 5-3. There was no more scoring the rest of the way by either team.

The Sharks will be back in action Saturday night against the Morehead City Marlins for a doubleheader beginning at 6:05PM at Buck Hardee Field. The gates are scheduled to open at 5:00PM. The first 500 fans into the stadium will receive a free Sharks Beach Towel presented by Wilmington Chamber of Commerce. Mike Picollo (0-1, 9.95) will start on the mound for the Sharks in game one.
