Tulsa Drillers News Release

August 27, 2008 - The Springfield Cardinals took advantage of a big error and a big home run to post a 5-3 win over the Tulsa Drillers Wednesday night at Hammons Field. The Cards broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run sixth inning, then held off a late Drillers rally for the win.

Three of the runs four runs in Springfield's big sixth inning were unearned. Allen Craig began the rally with a one-out single, and Brett Wallace reached on an error by shortstop Chris Nelson that could have been an inning-ending double play.

Following the error, Andrew Brown put the Redbirds on top with a base hit that scored Craig. Mark Shorey flied out, but Donovan Solano followed with a three-run homer over the wall in left field to give the Redbirds a 5-1 lead. It was Solano's first Double A home run.

The Drillers had opened the game's scoring with a run in the top of the third inning. Eric Young Jr. singled and scored on a double by Nelson.

Springfield responded in the bottom of the third. Matt Pagnozzi was hit by a Josh Hall pitch and moved to third on a double by James Rapoport. Pagnozzi then scored on a ground out to tie the game at 1-1.

Tulsa trimmed the Cardinals 5-1 lead with a two-run eighth inning. With one out, Dexter Fowler doubled, and Nelson singled to put runners at the corners. After a wild pitch scored Fowler, Tony Blanco singled to advance Nelson to third, bringing the tying run to the plate and forcing the Cards to call on closer Fernando Salas.

Salas retired Jeff Kindel on a sacrifice fly that brought Nelson home to make the score 5-3. Salas ended the attempted rally by retiring Gary Cates on a ground out.

The Cards' closer worked a 1-2-3 ninth to record his 25th save of the season.

Justin Fiske improved to a perfect 4-0 with the win, surrendering five hits and one run in six innings.

Josh Hall pitched well but was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-2. In six innings, he allowed five runs, but only two were earned.

The win allowed Springfield to stay within one game of first place Northwest Arkansas in the North Division standings with five games remaining in the season.

The Drillers and Cardinals will play game three of their four-game series Thursday night at Hammons Field. Keith Weiser (0-2, 3.54 ERA) will take the mound for Tulsa, while Springfield will counter with Brandon Dickson (3-1, 6.75 ERA) with first pitch at 7:10PM.

The game will be aired in Tulsa on KAKC AM 1300.
