Erie RiverRats Sign Former Steelers CB Jovon Johnson

(Belle Vernon, PA) - The Erie RiverRats of the AIFA announced the signing of CB Jovon Johnson, an Erie native, to a contract for the upcoming 2008 season.

Johnson (5'9"-177) joined the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad in 2006 following a standout career at the University of Iowa. In October 2006, he was signed by the Steelers and appeared in 2 games. In 2007, he played with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders of the CFL.

Johnson was an All-Big 10 performer at Iowa, where he played from 2002 to 2005 recording 17 career interceptions and 32 pass breakups. As a senior, Johnson led the Big 10 in punt return average, and finished among the conference leaders in pass breakups, interceptions, and tackles. In recognition of his career performance and NFL-level capability, he was selected to compete in the Hula Bowl.. He also appeared in four major college bowl games, including the Orange Bowl vs. USC, the Capital One Bowl vs. LSU, and twice in the Outback Bowl vs. Florida.

Johnson was a standout quarterback and defensive back at Mercyhurst Prep High School in Erie, PA, where his list of honors included being named first-team all-conference as a senior, honorable mention all-state as a junior, team MVP as a junior and senior, conference Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore, and conference Offensive Player of the Year as a junior.

He has excellent coverage skills and I wouldn't throw the ball his way if I was facing him. Jovon is clearly not afraid to get involved in the action and he also defends the run very well.
