Columbus Lions News Release
Columbus, GA (Feb. 25, 2008) - Monday set the start of the second week of training camp for the Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association as offensive and defensive lineman and linebackers reported for camp to join the skills players.
With the weather providing the Lions with a comfortable practice weekend, the bad weather decided to rear its ugly head back into the Lions faces during the morning session. "Even with the bad weather, we still will implement our offensive and defensive packages no matter rain, shine, sleet, or snow, because in the end, its still football," says Head Coach Jason Gibson. "With all our big guys reporting today, I can't wait to put all the pieces together. We plan on going hard the next 6 days so we can get a good evaluation," continues Gibson.
Despite the weather, rookie Keon Newson continued to impress the Lions coaching staff, including Defensive Coordinator Norbert Sullivan. "Keon locked all receivers down, all the receivers hate having to face him in practice," says Sullivan. 2nd year defensive back Cedric Ware also awed the coaching staff with his big play ability on both sides of the ball. On a side note, the team congratulated Ware on becoming a proud new father of a baby girl on Saturday.
The offensive side of the ball was not left without its big news as the Lions received a bonus when Anthony Merritt returned to the club after spending training camp with the Colorado Crush of the AFL.
The Columbus Lions will continue on their hunt to win the AIFA Championship, as they will resume practice all this week and next up until cut down day on March 7th. All practices are open to the public, for more information contact the Lions home office at 706-322-3DEN.
