Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that they have signed former-Edinburg Roadrunners star Eric Gonzalez (6-0, 200, University of Texas-Brownsville and Texas Southmost College).

The WhiteWings will introduce Gonzalez tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at Harlingen Field.

The La Feria native is primarily an outfielder, but has also spent considerable time at second and third base.

"I'm glad to be here. [WhiteWings manager] Eddie [Dennis is] a good friend of mine. I play the game hard and can play every position. I'm towards the end of my career so it's nice to be close to home. My family and friends have been asking me for years, 'when am I going to the Wings?' Now I get to play in front of my family and friends. I got to do that in Edinburg too, but I have more down here. I'm excited for this experience. I'm looking forward to having one of the best years of my career," Gonzalez said.

An original Roadrunner, Gonzlaez played in 692 games for Edinburg, batting .271 with 49 home runs and 342 RBI. He stole 85 bases in 108 attempts while racking up 142 doubles. His best season came in 2004, when he led the Roadrunners to the Central League Championship by batting .305 with 10 home runs and 53 RBI in 83 games. Gonzalez also hit 10 home runs in 2007 while hitting .272 with 38 RBI in 93 games.

Last season, Gonzalez hit .228 with nine doubles, three home runs and 33 RBI in 70 games.

Gonzalez will turn 31 when the WhiteWings host the Roadrunners in an exhibition game on May 24 at 11:05 a.m. at Harlingen Field.

Season tickets start at $120 and can be purchased by calling the WhiteWings at 423-WING (9464), or in-person at the Harlingen Field box office.

The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas. In its fifth season, the United League is gearing up for a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, Robstown and San Angelo.
