Eugene Emeralds News Release
EUGENE, OR - Hoping to steal a series victory in Salem, the Eugene Emeralds never recovered from an early deficit, limping to an 8-1 loss to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in front of 2,359 at Volcanoes Stadium.
Eduarniel Nunez, who breezed through the first inning on the mound, lost control of his fastball in the 2nd inning, walking Ricardo Genoves and plunking Carter Aldrete in the torso to start the frame. Kwan Adkins would later score both runners with a 2-run bloop single to left, giving the Volcanoes an early 2-0 lead.
Though the Emeralds were able to tack on a run with an RBI single from Edmond Americaan, Nunez quickly unraveled in the 4th inning. Carter Aldrete and Kwan Adkins both homered to right, highlighting a 4-run frame for the Volcanoes as they pulled away in the middle innings.
Eduarniel Nunez was charged with the loss after allowing 6 runs (5 earned) and 4 hits in just 3.1 innings of work. Chris Allen provided some length out of bullpen, lasting 4 innings while surrendering 2 earned runs. Jake Reindl made his Emeralds' debut by getting the final 2 outs in the 8th.
Kwan Adkins finished with 4 RBI's on 3 hits with 2 runs scored, including the 2-run home run in the 4th, his 2 second blast of the season for the Volcanoes. Jeff Houghtby had another strong night at the plate with 2 runs scored and an RBI double atop the lineup.
The Emeralds will look to bounce back on Monday night back home at PK Park, where they will begin a 7-game homestand. First up are the Spokane Indians, the champions of the 1st half in the North division.
First pitch on Monday night will be at 7:05pm with Didier Vargas scheduled to start for the Emeralds. Matt Dompe will handle play-by-by duties on 95.3 The Score.
