Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Kent Emanuel pitched five shutout innings and Jio Mier had the big blow in a four-run fourth as Corpus Christi blanked Tulsa 6-0 Tuesday at Whataburger Field before 4,080.
The Hooks (8-4) stopped a three-game skid. The Drillers (7-5) fell for the second time in seven contests.
Emanuel (1-0), Houston's third-round draft choice in 2013, stranded two in a two-hit first. North Carolina's 2013 ACC Pitcher of the Year scattered two other hits, walked one and struck out two in a 75-pitch outing (48).
Mitchell Lambson picked up where Emanuel left off, recording three shutout frames while facing one over the minimum and striking out three. Daniel Minor handled the ninth for Corpus Christi.
The Dodgers' top pitching prospect, Julio Urias, retired the first six Hooks before Telvin Nash belted a lead-off double to right field. Nash progressed to third on Mier's grounder to the right side and home when Tony Kemp beat out a sharp two-out infield bouncer up the middle.
Mier's bases-clearing, two-out triple to left-center extended Corpus Christi's lead to 4-0 in the fourth, and Roberto Pena followed with an RBI single. Brandon Meredith and Conrad Gregor singled during the rally and Tyler White drew a base-on-balls.
That was all for Urias (1-1) after six hits, a walk and two strikeouts. The 18-year-old threw 76 pitches (54 strikes).
His relief, Daniel Corcino, had control issues and didn't survive the fifth. Corcino walked three batters and hit another; Nash worked a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-0.
After an off day Wednesday, the Hooks hit the road for eight games - four at Frisco and four at Midland - before returning to Whataburger Field on May 1 against the RoughRiders.
