July 4, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
In what could prove to be a pivotal 3 game series for the Bend Elks as they attempt to make up ground in the division race, they were able to get the victory in game 1 on Sunday night against the Corvallis Knights, defeating their rival by a score of 5-2.
The Knights (14-10) got on the board early as they got 2 in the bottom of the 1st as the first 3 runners would reach base courtesy of 2 base hits and a hit by pitch followed by 2 RBI groundouts from David Andriese and Jimmy Allen. The Elks took the lead from the Knights in the top of the 3rd as they scored 3 runs, an RBI single from Bo Walter scored Donald Collins and Kyle Buchanan hit a 2 run single that scored Walter and Michael Benjamin. The Elks would then add 2 more in the top of the 4th as Benjamin, from Arizona State University, would hit the first pitch he saw over the wall for a 2 run home run, his first as a Bend Elk, extending the lead 5-2.
That would be enough for Chavez, who would settle down and provide 6 quality innings for the Elks, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 3. Joey McClung, who has quickly become a dependable arm out of the Elks bullpen, threw 2.2 innings scoreless innings, allowing just 2 base runners and getting 6 of his 8 outs courtesy of a strikeout.
The Elks (13-11) will now host the Knights for 2 more games starting tomorrow, the 4th of July, for a special Independence day celebration. The Elks will be in their camouflage jerseys, which will be auctioned off after the game with the proceeds going towards veterans, and fans will be allowed onto the field to watch the firework show at the conclusion of the game. Special game time as 1st pitch will go out at 7:15.
