Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso: July 3, 2011: *The Cowlitz Black Bears prepared for a Fireworks Extravaganza after the game Sunday night. What they could not plan for was the offensive fireworks provided by their hitters. Both cases came to pass for the record over 1700 fans in attendance.
Portland Stars starting pitcher Eric Weir struggled with his command, walking seven Black Bears and two others in his 2.1 innings of work. He couldn't finish the third inning, which saw 13 Cowlitz hitters come to the plate and nine runs hang on the scoreboard.
The Black Bears used this game to work out several pitchers. Andrew Brooks (Concordia) got the start, and Jake Doller (Kansas St.) pitched 3.1 innings of relief. Spencer O'Neil (University of Oregon) hit a home run to right field as part of a three-for-five night. Trent Zaks (UC-Irvine) walked with the bases loaded and added an RBI single in the 8th inning. Kirk Cunningham (LSU) couldn't avoid the baseball as the ball struck him in three consecutive trips to the plate.
The Black Bears leave for a three game series against WCL-leading Wenatchee Tuesday-Thursday. The team returns on Friday, July 8th for a weekend series against Klamath Falls. Friday Myron Noodleman will visit Story Field on Las Rocas Fabulous Friday courtesy of Beecher-Carlson Insurance and Longview Sewing.
