Elks Take Down Gems 13-5

July 20, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

The Elks scored 13 runs on eight hits on Wednesday night, capitalizing on six errors and 11 walks issued by Klamath Falls, and the Elks came away with the victory, defeating the Gems by a score of 13-5.

The Bend Elks got on the board first in the bottom of the third in a big way as the Elks got runners on first and second with two outs when Stetson Olson came through with an RBI single, Tyler Christian hit a ground ball to third that appeared it would have ended the inning, but Gems third baseman Tom DaBoy threw it away, allowing Christian to reach safely and bringing home two runs to make it 3-0. That was followed by Michael Benjamin, who hit a single to put runners on the corners with two outs. Michael Benjamin stole second on the next pitch and the catcher Drew Sandler threw down to second to try and get Benjamin, allowing Christian to score and make the score 4-0.

Klamath responded with three in the top of the third as a leadoff error allowed Kainoa Crowell to advance to second and score on an RBI double by Turner Gill, Ryan Doeppel and Nate Goodwin followed with a single and walk respectively to load the bases, and Zack Earle followed with a two run double to cut the lead to 4-3. The Elks got one back in the bottom of the fifth as Michael Benjamin tripled and scored on an RBI single by Ryan Dunn to make it 5-3.

Klamath tied the game up in the top of the sixth as Ryan Doeppel singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, Earle walked and with runners on second and third, Rich Sanguinetti delivered a two run single to tie the game at five.

The momentum would swing permanently to the Elks in the sixth inning with one out as the Gems pitching staff lost control of the strike zone. Two walks, a hit by pitch, and another walk plated the first run, followed by a two run single from Benjamin to make the score 8-5. After retiring Ryan Dunn on a line drive back to pitcher Andrew Jacobsen, Jordan Brower delivered a bases clearing triple, earning two RBI's and giving the Elks a 10-5 lead.

The Elks would add three more in the bottom of the eighth as control issues and poor defense by the Gems, who had six errors on the night, continued to plague them as all nine Elks hitters got to the plate in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Christian led off the inning with a walk, two consecutive errors on the infield loaded the bases with one out, Toby DeMello was walked to bring in the first run, Royce Bollinger grounded into an RBI fielder's choice, then two more walks, the second to Cullen Hendrickson, brought the third run home, resulting in the final 13-5 score.

The Elks will go for the sweep tomorrow, Thursday, on Jacoby Ellsbury Bobble Head Night, first pitch at 6:35. There are 1,000 bobble heads to give away, and the next 1,000 fans will get a Jacoby Ellsbury trading card.
