July 20, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
The Bend Elks picked up right where they left off on Tuesday night, picking up their fifth consecutive win, this time defeating the Klamath Falls Gems in extra innings by a score of 4-3. Ryan Dunn went 4-5 on the night with an RBI, helping to back the Elks pitching staff in getting the victory.
Klamath got on the board first in their first trip to the plate as Kainoa Crowell hit a 2 out single, followed by Turner Gill who hit a single that got by right fielder Nick Wagner, letting Crowell score and giving the Gems an early 1-0 lead.
The Elks responded by scoring one in the bottom of the third as Donald Collins would draw a nine pitch walk with one out, Bo Walter would follow with his second double of the game down the left field line, putting runners on second and third with one out, and that was followed by a sacrifice fly by Tyler Christian, scoring Collins and tying the game at 1.
The Gems retook the lead in the top of the fourth as they got two quick outs in the inning, then capitalized off of Jason Wilson, who began to have some control issues. He threw six consecutive balls and issued back to back walks with two outs, and that was followed by an RBI single from Bo Cornish. That was followed by a ground ball from Bo Cornish that looked to end the inning, but Tyler Christian had it dribble between his legs, bringing around Ashton McCoy and giving the Gems a 3-1 lead. Donald Collins hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 5th to cut the lead to one at 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bend Elks managed to tie it back up again with another run. Michael Benjamin led off the bottom half of the inning with a single, stole second, then Ryan Dunn hit an RBI double off the center field wall to tie the game at three.
That would be all of the scoring until the bottom of the tenth inning, as Gems pitcher Patrick O'Rourke would get a quick out, then give up a single and a double to put runners on second and third with one out. After intentionally walking Toby DeMello to load the bases with one out, pinch hitter Cullen Hendrickson was hit by a 1-0 fastball to bring in Stetson Olson, and the Elks would send their fans home happy with a walk off hit by pitch, beating the Gems 4-3.
Cameron Cuneo gets the victory after pitching 2.2 quality innings in relief, retiring every hitter he faced, including four strikeouts in helping the Elks win their fifth in a row. O'Rourke gets tagged with the loss for the Gems, who dropped their second in a row.
The teams will resume their series tomorrow for Free Kids Wednesday, 6:35 first pitch.
