JB Carroll slugged a grand slam off the scoreboard in right field to highlight a seven-run outburst in the first inning leading the Bend Elks' to an 11-2 victory and series sweep over visiting Klamath Falls in a West Coast League game at Vince Genna Stadium Wednesday evening.
Gems' starter Michael Silva walked the first five Elks leading to two runs before Brock Carpenter stroked a single to drive in the third run of the inning. Carroll followed with the bases-clearing roundtripper.
Starter Zach Carter earned the win with five strong innings of pitching. Jeff Albrecht, Clay Bauer, Luke Schneider, and Rio Gomez each pitched a scoreless inning for the Elks', collectively allowing one hit and striking out seven Klamath Falls hitters.
The Elks advance to 18-12 on the season while the Gems fall to 8-19.
Carroll and Jonathan Brooks stroked two hits a piece for Bend while Nick Lopez knocked in two runs.
Expansion team Yakima Valley visits Bend for the first time for a three-game set Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at Vince Genna Stadium. All games start at 6:35 pm.
