August 10, 2011 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
The Bend Elks ended their regular season Tuesday on fan appreciation night and gave their fans a show, putting up 14 runs on 18 hits, giving players a chance to rest and play different positions as they await their playoff fate. The Elks beat the NW Star Academy 14-1 and the Elks Split Squad beat the Stars 3-2. The Elks and Stars were tied at 1 after four innings as both starting pitchers were in control after shaky starts. Then in the 5th the Elks opened the game up after Derek Blankenshp's ground ball ate up the Stars third baseman and Donald Collins hit a two run single to make the score 4-1. Then in the 7th, after Blankenship led off the inning with a groundout, the Elks had ten consecutive hitters reach base as a result of hits, walks, scoring 9 runs in the inning to blow it open 13-1. Bend would add one more in the bottom of the eighth, but the game was well under wrap at that point. With the Cowlitz Black Bears beating the Corvallis Knights, the Elks will know of their playoff fate at the end of Wednesday night. If the Black Bears win, they advance. If the Knights win, the Elks will host game 1 of the West division playoffs Friday against the Corvallis Knights.
