Elks Fall to AppleSox 7-4

June 7, 2012 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release

After both offenses struggled Tuesday night, the Elks (2-2) and the AppleSox (4-2) both played quality baseball, but a couple of timely hits and too many strikeouts for the Elks proved to be the difference as the Elks lost their 2nd game in as many days to the AppleSox by a score of 7-4.

The game was scoreless until the top of the 5th inning when the Elks came through after a 1 out single by Sky Kellye and Jo Carroll was walked by Wenatchee starter Jake Fife (1-0), Darian Ramage delivered a 2 out RBI single to give the Elks a 2-0 lead. After Ramage stole second, Jordan Harlow followed with a 2 out single that would score Ramage from second base after a close play at the plate to extend the lead to 3-0.

Wenatchee would get 1 back in the bottom of the 5th before the real problems occurred in the bottom of the 6th against Elks starter JR Bunda. Bunda pitched well on the mound overall, but the right handed pitcher from Portland, who spent most of his time in the bullpen for the Pilots, began to tire and become increasingly frustrated with calls in the 6th inning, ultimately costing the Elks in the game. After giving up a run, he was replaced by Darin Gillies, who was unsuccessful in recording an out in the game. He was shortly replaced by Josh McAlister, who would eventually get the Elks out of the inning, but not before 3 runs scored and the AppleSox had a 4-3 lead.

The Apple Sox would add 2 in the 7th, and the Elks would trim the lead to 6-4 after Ryne Clark had a leadoff triple in the top of the 8th and scored, but that would be the Elks final run of the game as the AppleSox scored a run in the bottom of the 8th to result in the final margin.

The Elks will look to avoid being swept tomorrow in Wenatchee, first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Travis Radke is expected to start tomorrow for Bend against Zack Abbruzza.
