Bend Elks News Release

In what proved to be a real up and down game at Vince Genna Stadium on Wednesday, the Cowlitz Black Bears scored in the top of the tenth inning then held on for the win, beating the Bend Elks by a score of 8-7.

In the top of the third, the Black Bears loaded the bases with nobody out, Cody Webster grounded into an RBI fielder's choice and Greg Velasquez hit an RBI single to make the game 2-0. The Black Bears added three more runs in the top of the fourth as the Black Bears got an RBI single from Beau Didier and with the bases loaded with two outs get a two run single from Spencer O Neil to make it 5-0.

The Elks got one back in both the fourth and fifth innings, as Ryan Dunn hit an RBI single to score Jordan Brower in the fourth and Cullen Hendrickson hit a solo home run in the fifth to cut the lead 5-2. Cowlitz answered with one in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Braxton Miller, making the score 6-2.

Then in the bottom of the 7th, the Elks led off the inning with back to back singles from Toby DeMello and Hendrickson, and Collins singled to load the bases with one out. After a pop out from Bo Walter, Tyler Christian came to the plated and delivered a two run double to cut the lead to two. That was followed by Jordan Brower, who delivered a sharp ground ball to Cowlitz short stop Mitchel Walding, who couldn't handle it, allowing Collins to score, making the game 6-5.

In the 8th, Black Bears center fielder led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a pass ball, making the score 7-5. In the bottom of the 8th, DeMello and Hendrickson got on base with one out to bring up Justin Maffei, who delivered a clutch two run single off of reliever Andrew Lines, tying the game at 7. That was until the 10th inning, as leadoff hitter Billy Flamion was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to second, then with one out, Garlick delivered a base hit to center field. As Flamion rounded third and headed for home, Elks center fielder delivered a strike to catcher Kyle Buchanan who mishandled the throw and dropped it, allowing Flamion to score what would prove to be the game winning run. Bo Walter would get a 2 out single in the bottom of the 10th, but Tyler Christian struck out to end the game.

The Elks will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow, first pitch scheduled for 6:35.
