Elks Beat Yakima 4-3 in Game 1
July 22, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Bend Elks News Release
After a 2 day break for the WCL all star game, the Elks were on the road in Yakima Tuesday evening and the Elks defeated the Pippins 4-3 at Yakima County Stadium. It was a different looking lineup for the Elks as their season long leadoff hitter and centerfielder Christian Cavaness left the team after signing with the Minnesota Twins during the break.
Derek Chapman, playing in centerfield for the first time this season, had a big night at the plate, going 2-4 with 3 RBI'S. Tyler Davis continues his hot hitting going 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Aaron Leasher started for the Elks but was unable to get through the first inning. He walked the first Pippin he faced, then hit the second batter in the face requiring him to leave the game, he then walked the bases loaded. At that point, Head Coach Trey Watt brought in Riley Newman who got the next batter to ground in to a double play, allowing only a single to Yakima run to score in the 1st. Newman stayed on the mound in relief for 5 and a 3rd more innings before Watt handed things over to Sam Boone, then Daniel Bies to finish the game. The relievers allowed 2 more Pippin runs, however neither was an earned run. Newman got his first win of the year and Bies collected his second save.
The Elks are now 29-8 for the year, the best record in the WCL and now lead the South Division by 10 games over the Corvallis Knights and 13 over the Medford Rogues as both division rivals lost Tuesday evening. Game 2 from Yakima is set for Wednesday night at Yakima County Stadium. The game can be streamed at bendelks.com, with The Elks pregame show with Trey Watt and Tris Reisfar at 6:45 and the first pitch set for 7:05 PM.
