Bend Elks News Release
The Bend Elks got their 2012 home schedule off to a bang with a 6-3 win thanks to good pitching and timely hitting from Elks right fielder Sky Kelley as the Elks took down the Klamath Falls Gems by a score of 6-3.
Darin Gillies got the start and the win for the Elks on Friday night, moving his record to 2-0 on the young season. Gillies went 5 innings, giving up just 3 hits and one unearned run, striking out four. Gillies likely would have stayed in the game longer if not for his pitch count, throwing 91 pitches in the 5 innings. The rest of the bullpen in Brandon Snyder, Josh McAlister, and Trevor Hildenberger, combined for 4 innings of work in which they surrendered just 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits the rest of the way.
Offensively, Sky Kelley from Williamete University hit the Elks first home run of the season, taking a 1-1 fastball from Gems starter Nathan Bunch, and putting it over the left field wall to give the Elks a 4-1 lead after 4. The Elks added two runs in the bottom of the 8th due in large part to a 2 run double by Sky Kelley, who drove in 3 of the Elks 6 runs on the night.
The Elks resume their homestand Saturday against the Gems, first pitch at 6:35 p.m. on Free Cap Night, courtesy of American Licorice and the Center.
