
Elder and Checksfield hurt former team

Little Falls, NJ- Former Jackal players, Steve Checksfield and Rick Elder hurt New Jersey, in a 7-4 Elmira victory.
Elmira scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded against New Jersey starter Jackson Crowther, Matt Cucurullo pushed one across on a sacrifice fly.
The Jackals answered back in the top of the third. A two out, two RBI double by Kevin Grijak gave the Jackals the lead, but it was short lived.
The Pioneers came up big with two runs of their own, on RBI doubles by Dennis Abreu and former Jackal Steve Checksfield.
Another lead change occurred in the top of the fourth. After Chris Rowan reached on an error, and Mike Bassett reached base on a walk, Juan Infante doubled down the left field line, scoring both runners, and giving the Jackals the lead once again.
The fourth lead change came in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI single by Elder, and a two run homerun by Checksfield, helped the Pioneers retake the lead. Through five innings, Elmira led 6-4.
An insurance run would come for the Pioneers in the sixth. Abreu would notch his third hit of the night, leading to his second RBI of the game, and a 7-4 Elmira advantage.
Starter Jackson Crowther pitched five innings for the Jackals, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits. He picked up his fifth loss of the season.
Joe Van Gorder of the Elmira Pioneers went six and two third innings, giving up four runs, two of them being earned, while scattering six hits. He improves his record to 4-1.
Kevin Grijak was 2-5 with two doubles and two RBI. John Anderson reached base four times with two walks and two singles.
Steve Checksfield was 2-4 with a homerun, a double and three RBI. Rick Elder was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Dennis Abreu went 3-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
