El Paso Locomotive FC News Release
EL PASO, Texas - El Paso Locomotive (8-6-4, 28 points, West-5) claimed a full three points over New York Red Bulls II following a 5-0 victory on Saturday night. Midfielder Eric Calvillo scored two goals while Midfielders Christiano Francois and Nick Hinds and Forward Aaron Gomez each earned a goal.
"The first half was very impressive, and the second half was a professional performance," commented Locomotive Head Coach and Technical Director John Hutchinson. "I'm happy them to get some goals and happy to play some good football. We got a clean sheet as well which is great for Evan [Newton] and the defenders and the attackers who were pressing all night. Overall, I'm happy with the performance."
Locomotive tore through the young New York Red Bulls II side throughout their first meeting. As rain poured on the pitch in the opening 45 minutes, so too did Locomotive goals. Francois opened the goal scoring early in the 4th minute, sneaking home a shot following a corner kick. The goals kept coming for El Paso with Calvillo finding his first of the night moments later running to meet Forward Aaron Gomez in the box. Calvillo took one touch bury his shot into the back of the net. Hinds followed suit just shy of the 20th minute with redirecting to the near post a pass back from Midfielder Sebastian Velasquez. Just before the first half ended, Calvillo would earn his brace, putting home a goal on an open net center of the box.
The game continued to match rain, slowing down as the weather calmed. El Paso Locomotive FC continued to apply pressure on NYRBII, but the youthful defense packed in to put a stop to the fast-paced Locos. Francois took early chances that went wide of the post while a header from Forward Lucho Solignac hit into the wrong side of the netting. In the end, Gomez would add to his two assists with a goal in the 74th minute, converting an open goal after pairing with Solignac. On the other end, Goalkeeper Evan Newton continued to show why he holds league records, making four saves throughout the night. Paired with defensive heroics from Defender Yuma, Newton earned his sixth clean sheet of the season.
UP NEXT: El Paso Locomotive hits the road once more to take on Rio Grande Valley FC for their first meeting of the 2022 USL Championship season. Kickoff from H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas is set for 6:30 p.m. MT and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN
ELP: Christiano Francois (Andrew Fox), 4th minute: Through the set piece, Sebastian Velasquez took a great shot through the legs of some NYRBII defenders. While the New York goalkeeper deflected the shot wide, Fox was the first to latch onto it. His touch was enough to get in front of Francois who easily slotted home the opening goal.
ELP: Eric Calvillo (Aaron Gomez), 12th minute: A beautiful ball forward found Gomez with nothing but space behind. Gomez held up his run to wait for reinforcements which arrived in the form of Calvillo. Gomez played the ball perfectly into the path of Calvillo who took one touch to bury it in the back of the net.
ELP: Nick Hinds (Sebastian Velasquez), 19th minute: Following another corner kick opportunity, the ball went to the back post where Andrew Fox was able to keep the ball in play. The NYRBII defender poorly sent his pass into Sebastian Velasquez, who out played his defender to endline. His cutback pass easily found Hinds who rifled his shot near post for the third.
ELP: Eric Calvillo (Aaron Gomez), 36th minute: Breaking defenders down the left side of the pitch, Aaron Gomez cut the ball back in towards the penalty spot where Calvillo was left unmanned. Without taking a step, Calvillo redirected the ball into the wide-open net.
ELP: Aaron Gomez (Lucho Solignac), 74th minute: What started as a long ball from Nick Hinds to find Christiano Francois across the field, ended with an incredible forward run from Lucho to get in behind the NYRBII defense. With Gomez alongside him, Lucho and Gomez went 2-on-1 against the New York goalkeeper to set Gomez up for an easy goal conversion for the fifth and final of the night.
