Republic FC Win Fifth Victory

June 26, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

Seaside, Calif. - Republic FC claimed their fifth straight victory on Saturday night, following up on Tuesday's Open Cup win with a come-from-behind victory over Monterey Bay F.C. Sacramento stays undefeated in regional derby matches this season with the win and climbs into a three-way tie for third in the table.

After surrendering an own goal and putting just one attempt on target through the hour mark, Sacramento's substitutes came on the pitch and made an instant impact. Maalique Foster's first career brace brought the Indomitable Club back from being down a goal to going ahead and claiming all three points.

Just as they did in their last match, Sacramento got to work early on the attacking end. Jack Gurr came close to opening the scoring in the 7th minute, putting in a great cross from the right. But Sacramento's attackers were unable to get a touch on it. Moments later the English defender found space in the middle and put up a rocket from distance that sailed just high.

Duke Lacroix found a great look for Sacramento close range, driving forward in the 31st minute only to find his attempt saved. Monterey Bay opened scoring on the counter, catching Sacramento off guard in transition. A bad luck touch resulted in an own goal against Republic FC.

Sacramento did well to keep play in their attacking half out of the break. A trio of chances nearly pulled the club even, but shots from Matt LaGrassa, Luis Felipe and Dan Casey didn't find the target.

Mark Briggs brought on reinforcements to add to the attack just after the hour mark. Ten minutes after entering for Zeiko Lewis and Luis Felipe, Rodrigo Lopez and Maalique Foster got Sacramento on the board. After fielding a great through ball threaded in by Rodrigo Lopez, Foster left Monterey's backline in the dust and netted his second score of the season. Three minutes later, Foster found another score, heading in a Jack Gurr cross for his second in three minutes - Sacramento's first multi-goal performance in league play this season.

Republic FC takes the pitch again this coming Friday on the road, when they take to the Rocky Mountains for a league match with Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on July 1. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m., and the match will be broadcast live on Antenna TV 40.2, FOX40.com and the FOX40 News mobile app, as well as streaming on ESPN+.
