"They're good boys. It's a relief for them, really," said Head Coach and Technical Director John Hutchinson. "It's a relief, but the message is really clear and it's always really clear: 'Well done. Let's get back to work Monday. Let's focus on the next game in San Antonio and let's work on that. Let's go there and get points as well and come back to El Paso with something to show from all our hard work from preseason up to this point.'"
From the opening whistle, there was no question that El Paso Locomotive dominated the entire match. Locomotive peppered the Monterey Bay goal with 23 shots throughout the entire night, while defensively coming together to leave the California team without a shot on goal. The Sun City team opened its scoring in the 19th minute with a corner kick that Fox headed in over the goal line. Just before the half, Gomez doubled the lead, burying a penalty kick with power and placement. Just before the halftime whistle blew, the Locos picked up a man advantage as Robbie Crawford earned a second yellow and was shown red, leaving the Crisp and Kelp with 10-men for the second half.
Locomotive took advantage of the extra man, quickly finding the opening goal in the offset of the second 45 minutes. Gomez recorded his brace by catching Monterey Bay goalkeeper Dallas Jay off his line with a chip into the netting. Luna extended the lead in the 51st minute, expertly breaking the Monterey Bay defense before putting power behind his strike for what should be a Goal of the Week contender. Mares put the cherry on top of the 5-0 clean sheet for El Paso Locomotive in the 75th minute with a swift shot that skipped across the grass and out of reach of Jaye.
UP NEXT: El Paso Locomotive goes on the road to begin its Copa Tejas title defense with a match against San Antonio FC at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 16. Kickoff from San Antonio, Texas is schedule for 6:30 p.m. MT and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN
ELP: Andrew Fox (Dylan Mares), 19th minute: From a corner kick, Mares sent the ball deep to the far post where Fox soared with his head above the rest to redirect the ball over the goal line. While a Monterey Bay defender headed it back out, it was a little too late as the referee rewarded the goal to El Paso.
ELP: Aaron Gomez (Penalty Kick), 35th minute: After Fox drew a foul in the box, the referee pointed to the spot. Aaron Gomez stepped up, burying the penalty kick with power and placement into the left side of the box where a diving Dallas Jaye could do nothing to save it.
ELP: Aaron Gomez (Eder Borelli), 47th minute: Following a long ball from Eder Borelli that took a slight deflection off the foot of a Monterey Bay midfielder, Gomez found himself with the ball on the other side of the defensive line. Gomez caught the MBFC goalkeeper off his line, chipping him neatly to earn his brace.
ELP: Diego Luna (Eder Borelli), 51st minute: In a beautiful series of footwork from Luna, the 18-year-old midfielder broke two defenders while taking the ball to the end line before cutting back and moving center. Once he got into position, Luna rifled a shot in towards goal, extending the Locomotive lead.
ELP: Dylan Mares, 75th minute: Mares topped off the five-goal win by out dribbling his marking defender to open a shot that he took swiftly and low to skip across the grass. The ball took a few bounces on its way but ultimately tucked away neatly into the corner of the net just out of reach of Dallas Jaye.
