
El Paso Generals Welcome New Additions to Coaching Staff

EL PASO, TX. : The El Paso Generals announced on Thursday, November 13th, 2008 from Fuddruckers in El Paso, two additions to the Generals Coaching Staff. Gary Patterson has been brought in as the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach for the club, as William McCarthy has been hired as the Offensive/Defensive Lines Coach and Special Teams Coordinator.
"We are excited to be bringing in two well-experienced coaches for this season. Both have had very successful coaching careers, and I'm glad to have known each of them on a professional and personal level. We are confident that Gary and William will be the right caliber of coaches on this staff that will help lead our team to a successful season." stated El Paso Generals Head Coach Brian Brents.
GARY PATTERSON - DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR / ASSISTANT HEAD COACH -
Coach Patterson was born in Odessa, Texas and is proud to be a â94 graduate of Permian High school where he also lettered in football. Patterson has played and coached football for the past 12 years at various levels of the game. He is currently finishing up his Bachelors Degree in Biology/Kinesiology at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Patterson spent the last two seasons along side Head Coach Brian Brents with the Mississippi Mudcats of the AIFA. While in Mississippi, Patterson was part of a coaching staff that led the Mudcats to a combined record of 24-5 during those two seasons. Before Mississippi, Coach Patterson was with the Odessa Roughnecks of the former Intense Football League. Patterson was involved with a Roughnecks organization that reached the conference championship in â04, register an undefeated regular season in â05, and win the IFL Championship in â06. Coach Patterson also led the Roughnecks defense to the number one ranking in 2005 and 2006. Patterson has helped numerous players advance to the AFL and CFL. "I"m looking forward to the season, and working hard to bring a championship to El Paso. It is an honor to be part of such a great organization." stated Defensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach Gary Patterson.
WILLIAM McCARTHY - OL / DL / SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR -
Coach McCarthy comes to the Generals after spending the 2008 season with the Mercyhurst Lakers, coaching their defensive line and special teams. While at Mercyhurst, McCarthy coached specific players that would eventually become the team's Most Valuable Player and a All-Conference defensive end. Prior to Mercyhurst, McCarthy spent the spring of 2008 with the Mississippi Mudcats of the AIFA where he began the season as the offensive/defensive lines coach, and special teams coordinator under Head Coach Brian Brents. Following 12 games, he assumed the role of head coach for the remainder of the season, leading the club to a 3-1 record under his leadership. McCarthy has a wealth of coaching knowledge and has coached several NCAA Division-1A athletes, NJCAA All-Americans, and AIFA All-League performers. McCarthy is a native of Kentucky and played collegiately at Morehead State University.
