For the eighth consecutive New Years' Eve, the Waterloo Black Hawks earned one last win before turning the calendar; Thursday's victory came in a shootout, 4-3 against the Lincoln Stars at Young Arena.
The decision snapped a three-game losing streak in the current campaign. It was also the seventh game out of the Hawks' last eight settled by a one-goal margin. That differential went in Waterloo's favor thanks to a Patrick Divjak power play goal, with an extra attacker also on the ice, as the game clocked ticked down to 32.5 seconds remaining. Waterloo needed Divjak's goal to tie the game at three after Kyle Gibbons put Lincoln ahead with a power play strike just over two minutes earlier.
After killing a Lincoln advantage in overtime, the Black Hawks converted three-of-five shootout chances. Tyler Barnes, Brock Montpetit, and Nick Sorkin made the most of their opportunities, with Sorkin notching the shootout-clincher. Josh Berge and Gibbons scored for Lincoln in the five-round affair.
The evening began with a Waterloo goal 3:16 into the action, the first in the USHL for rookie Scott Wamsganz. The Stars tied the game at 6:04 of the second on a shorthanded marker from Ben Lynch. Midway through the period, the clubs exchanged power play goals in a short span, as Sorkin helped the Hawks retake the lead on a rebound goal at 10:44 before John McCarron tied it once more with a deflection at 12:30.
In net for the Hawks, C.J. Groh earned his first victory with 31 saves and three shootout stops.
The Hawks will enjoy New Years' Day to rest before hosting the Indiana Ice on Saturday, January 2nd. The first 700 fans for the 7:05 contest will receive a Black Hawks hat from Community Auto Group.
