NEW YORK (Wednesday, March 3, 2004) - Eight players were waived by Major League Soccer clubs Tuesday and will be made available in the upcoming MLS Waiver Draft, to be conducted on Thursday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m. ET via conference call from League headquarters in New York. The eight players available include both 2000 U.S. Olympic Team co-captains, a Honduran National Team defender, the No. 2 selection in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft and a veteran of the 1998 World Cup. The following waiver transactions necessitate Thursday's Waiver Draft:

COLUMBUS CREW:

D CHAD MCCARTY - The 2000 U.S. Olympic Team co-captain is a six-year MLS veteran. The 26-year-old played in 19 games (14 starts) for Columbus last year, his second season with the Crew.

DALLAS BURN:

F ALI CURTIS - After scoring a goal in 17 appearances (12 starts) with D.C. United, the 25-year-old Curtis was traded to the Dallas Burn on August 19, 2003 in a deal which saw forward Ronald Cerritos moving to United. The No. 2 overall selection in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft and 1999 Hermann Trophy winner registered a goal and two assists in eight appearances with Dallas.

M CHAD DEERING - The 33-year-old Plano, Texas native and a veteran of the 1998 World Cup, led the Burn in starts (26) and tied for the team lead in appearances (27) and assists (5) in 2003. Deering was a member of the Dallas Burn since 1998.

D BRIAN DUNSETH - The 2000 U.S. Olympic Team co-captain with Chad McCarty was traded by the Columbus Crew to the Dallas Burn on August 21, 2003 in exchange for a Conditional Draft pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. An MLS player since 1997, the 26-year-old Dunseth started all nine matches in which he played for the Burn after starting in 17 of his 19 appearances in Columbus.

D EZRA HENDRICKSON - The Galaxy team MVP in 2001 and MLS Cup champion with Los Angeles in 2002, the 31-year-old Hendrickson was traded from the Galaxy to the Dallas Burn in a July 11, 2003 blockbuster trade. The seven-year MLS veteran holds dual citizenship in both the United States and St. Vincent & The Grenadines, while playing for the latter on the international level. He appeared in 16 matches for the Galaxy and 12 for the Burn last year, failing to start in just three of those games combined.

D.C. UNITED:

M JOSE ALEGRIA - The 23-year-old Alegria, a Transitional International, played a variety of roles within the D.C. midfield in 2003, logging 17 appearances (13 starts). Over the course of his three-year MLS career, Alegria appeared in 38 League matches for United, starting 26. A native of Lima, Peru, Alegria was raised in Springfield, Virginia where he played youth soccer for the Washington Diplomats, alongside Kenny Arena, son of former D.C. United head coach Bruce Arena.

D MILTON REYES - Signed as a Discovery Player prior to the 2002 MLS season, the 29-year-old Honduran international and greencard holder missed the entire 2003 season after suffering an ACL and meniscus tear in a pre-season exhibition against the A-League Richmond Kickers. His last League appearance came back on September 19, 2002 but recently played for the Honduran National Team in a Feb. 18 friendly against Lithuania.

METROSTARS:

D EDGAR BARTOLOMEU - A Senior International from Angola, the versatile left-footed defender was acquired from the Chicago Fire on June 25, 2003 as compensation for the rights to midfielder Andy Williams. Bartolomeu, who made his MLS debut in 2003, has also seen time with the Philadelphia Kixx (MISL), Buffalo Blizzard (NPSL), Toronto Lynx (A-League) and Long Island Rough Riders (D-3). He played in 13 games (starting 11) for the MetroStars.

The selection order of Thursday's Waiver Draft is as follows: (1) Dallas Burn, (2) Columbus Crew, (3) Los Angeles Galaxy, (4) D.C. United, (5) Colorado Rapids, (6) MetroStars, (7) Kansas City Wizards, (8) New England Revolution, (9) Chicago Fire and (10) San Jose Earthquakes.

The Waiver Draft selection order is based on the original order of the 2004 SuperDraft (held on Jan. 16), which takes into consideration each team's record during the 2003 season and how far each club advanced in the 2003 MLS Cup Playoffs. In the event a team claims a player in an MLS Waiver Draft, such team drops to the bottom of the claiming order for future 2004 Waiver Drafts. The March 4 Waiver Draft is the second of the offseason, following the Nov. 25, 2003 Waiver Draft held two days after MLS Cup 2003. No teams made selections in the November Waiver Draft, thereby leaving the current order intact.
