La Manga, Murcia, Spain (Wednesday, March 3, 2004) â The MetroStars tied Real Murcia of the Spanish Primera Division, 0-0, today in a friendly match at La Manga Club Resort in La Manga, Murcia, Spain.
In the last minute of the contest, MetroStars defender Craig Ziadie lofted a cross from the right wing into the Murcia box. Murcia goalkeeper Juanmi rushed out to play the pass, but the wind pushed the cross to the top of the box away from him as he was caught out of position. The ball was deflected by Murcia defender Ivan Hurtado and fell to MetroStars midfielder Eddie Gaven at the top of the box. The 17-year-old fired a quick shot that Juanmi blocked as he was trying to regain position.
MetroStars rookie goalkeeper Zach Wells made several saves to secure the shutout. In the 35th minute, Murcia midfielder Richi dribbled into the left side of the box and found forward David Karanka with a cross. Karanka one-timed a shot that Wells dove to save. Wells came up with another stop in the 42nd minute, when Karanka hit a hard, bouncing shot that the UCLA product grathered.
The "Red and Black" will now turn their total attention to the 2004 La Manga Cup Final against Viking of the Norwegian Tippeligaen on Friday, March 5 at 6:00 p.m. local time (12:00 p.m. ET). The Metros dropped a 1-0 result to Viking in the first match of La Manga Cup last week.
