Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - Independent baseball will inevitably have some turn over when it comes to playing rosters but the Edmonton Capitals announced Thursday that their coaching staff will remain intact for the upcoming season. Field Manager Brent Bowers will be joined by Pitching Coach Mark Randall and Hitting Coach Gord Gerlach.

Bowers was a former second round draft pick in the 1989 Major League Baseball Entry Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and has managed at various levels of professional baseball since his playing days in the Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles organizations. The Chicago, Illinois native is currently managing a team in the Arizona Winter League and will re-join the Capitals later in the spring.

Randall is a St. Albert native and originally a draft pick of the Philadelphia Phillies and has been involved with the Canadian National team and locally with the St. Francis Xavier Baseball Academy. Gerlach has been a fixture on the local baseball scene for quite some time and has previously managed the Australian National Champions, the Perth Heat and has been a coach with Canada's national team as well.

Other rule changes in the Golden Baseball League for 2010 include the elimination of the designated hitter position so pitchers will take their turn at the plate. Over 100 GBL players have been acquired by Major League Baseball or professional international baseball organizations during the last four years and over 70 former Major Leaguers have played in the GBL including the Capitals' own former MLB all-star Jose Lima.

The Caps are also proud co-hosts of the upcoming TouchEye Motion Analysis baseball camp for coaches and players January 29th - 31st at the home of the Capitals - TELUS Field. This unique baseball experience combines leading technology with some of the top coaches in professional baseball connected to our region including the Capitals Randall and Gerlach along with MVP pitcher Lou Pote. They'll be joined by San Diego Padres Hitting Coach Orv Franchuk, and Wayne Ryder from TouchEye Motion Analysis for coaches sessions Friday night and 2 days of kids clinics over the weekend.
