2010 Arizona Winter League Set For Opening Night

(Yuma, AZ. January 28, 2010) The Arizona Winter League is set to kick off it's fourth season tomorrow night in Yuma, Arizona. With eight teams and 173 players that have come to Arizona from 33 states and seven countries, the AWL will showcase some of the finest free agent professional baseball talent in the country. Managers of the teams this year include:

Blythe Heat: Garry Templeton
San Diego Surf Dawgs: Tim Johnson
San Luis Atleticos: Eddie Dennis
Yuma Scorpions: Mike Marshall

Calgary Vipers: Boots Day
Saskatchewan Silver Sox: Paul Abbott
Team Canada: Brent Bowers
Western Canada Miners: Brooks Carey

Roving Pitching Coordinator: Les Lancaster
Roving Pitching Coordinator: James Frisbie
Roving Hitting & Infield Coordinator: Wally Backman
Roving Hitting & Catching Coordinator: Ozzie Virgil, Jr.
Roving Hitting & Catching Coordinator: Toby Rumfield

The 20-game season begins tomorrow and features a 6 P.M. game at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona with Japanese female knuckleballer Eri Yoshida starting on the mound for the Yuma Scorpions against Team Canada.

This free agent league for professional players has resulted in over 100 players be signed by professional teams the last three seasons. Two of those players, Segio Romo (Giants) and Scott Richmond (Blue Jays) have already reached the major leagues.
